Condamine
La Condamine (in Monegasque A Cundamina) is the shopping district of Monaco located between the Rocher (Monaco-Ville) to the west and Monte-Carlo to the east, that is to say behind the port Hercule. The commercial area of Condamine is the most diverse of the Principality with 200 shops located in a typical neighborhood around a traditional market square. The main monument of this quarter is the church of Sainte-Dévote built in the hollow of the “Vallon des Gaumates” under the reign of Prince Charles III and inaugurated on January 25, 1871. The chapel is built on the premises where a barque carrying the body mutilated Of Dévote, a young Christian, would have run aground at the beginning of the fourth century. Every year, and since 1924, on the 26th of January (Eve of the Holy Devote), a boat is burned at dusk. Sainte-Dévote is the protective soul of Monegasque identity.
